Horror-movie-references we noticed in AHS1984
AHS: 1984

(You’ll find some of our inspiration for #Bingetober there.)

List: 31 movies in 31 days

October 1st: It (2017, 2019)

Kick things off with a double feature.

Villain: It; aka. Pennywise; aka. every nightmare you’ve ever had. Your worst dream come true. Everything you ever were afraid of.

Hero: The losers.

October 2nd: Friday the 13th (1980)

Jason Voorhees Friday the 13th (1980).
The hunt for the cup starts now 🏒

(THE ORIGINAL)

We know, the famous hockey mask does not appear until Friday the 13th Part III, but with hockey starting today, we couldn’t help ourselves.

Villain: [SPOILER ALERT] in one of the most iconic twists of all time… the killer is revealed to be Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s grieving mother.

Hero: Alice Hardy

DID YOU KNOW:

“ki ki ki maa ma ma ma” (aka the creepy breathy-voice sound effect in horror movies) ORIGINATED from Friday the 13th. The film’s composer, Harry Manfredini, created the sound by reducing the words ‘kill’ & ‘mommy’ down to 2 syllables – taken from audio of Pamela saying “Kill her mommy!” in the 1980 film

October 3rd: Blade (1998)

Wesley Snipes in Blade
Daywalker!

New York Comic Con starts today! In honor of #NYCC, we’re watching movies inspired by comics. Starting with today’s pick, Blade.

Hero: Blade; Eric Brooks; The Daywalker

Villain: Vampires; Deacon Frost aka. La Magra, the vampire blood god

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE REBOOT?

Upcoming Blade remake by Marvel Studios starring Mahershala Ali.
So exciting, isn’t it?

Marvel is creating a Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali!

October 4th: Joker (2019)

Joker (2019) starring Joaquin Phoenix.
Send in the clowns

Joker comic 1975

Happy #SmileDay! Today’s comic-book inspired film is Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. In theaters today!

This joker installment is an origin story set in 1981, that follows Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime in Gotham.

Hero: unclear (Batman makes no appearance)

Villain: the joker

October 5th: The Crow (1994)

Real love is forever

Eric
James O’Barr’s The Crow (1989)

On the third day of New York Comic Con, we chose the comic-book-turned movie, The Crow (1994) based on James O’Barr’s 1989 comic by the same name. The film stars Brandon Lee in his final film appearance, who shockingly died on set.

Hero: The titular Crow aka. Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) rises from the dead to take revenge against the violent gang who murdered him and his fiancé; assuming the gothic mantle of ‘The Crow’, a supernatural avenger.

Villain: T-Bird and his gang.

DURING FILMING THEY USED RAVENS, NOT CROWS.

Animal trainer Larry Madrid trained five ravens for the production. Because The Crow filmed at night—when ravens sleep—he had to get the birds accustomed to that, as well as flying in the rain (which is also unnatural for the birds) and in a wind tunnel. One of the ravens also had to be trained to be comfortable sitting on Lee’s shoulder.

October 6th: The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense

(we are not against cheeky numerical references and puns. far from it. you have been warned.)

Villain: Ghosts, on the surface. But really the ghosts aren’t really good or evil. The film explores themes of grief, fear, isolation, communication and of course the supernatural – using ghosts as conduits for these greater discussions.

Hero: No one really.

WHAT’S IN A NAME

The main characters’ last names are subtle hints to their fates. Cole Sear (pronounced see-er) is able to see things ordinary people cannot; Malcolm’s last name, Crowe, sounds like crows–a bird often associated with death (see previous entry!).

SEEING RED

The color red is scarcely used in the film, but when it is used in isolated shots it represents, according to M. Night Shyamalan, “anything in the real world that has been tainted by the other world”.

October 7th: SE7EN (1995)

Image result for brad pitt seven whats in the box
What’s in the box?

Our seventh choice is Se7en (sensing a pattern here?), David Fincher’s film about two detectives (Morgan Freeman + Brad Pitt!!) chasing after a murderer whose kills are based on the seven sins.

Villain: John Doe

Hero: Detective William Somerset (Freeman) and Detective David Mills (Brad).

WHAT’S IN THE F*CKING BOX?

There are a few “head shots” throughout the film – subtle cinematography choices that foreshadow the gut-wrenching ending.

Tracy in Se7en

Several times throughout the film the camera cuts to Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), with a square framing her head, separating it from her body…

(like we imagine John Doe does in the box. sorry).

GR8FUL

See you tomorrow for our next entry, which thankfully is not Ei8ht, the planned sequel for Se7en. A film that Fincher said, upon receiving the script, that he’d rather have cigarettes put out on his eyes than make.

October 8th: The Shining (1980)

“Herrrrrrrre’s Johnny!
With a month left til the release of the sequel (Dr. Sleep) we thought it most fitting that our today’s movie be, The Shining – based on the novel by Stephen King.

Image result for the shining

The film is about Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a man who plans to live for the winter with his wife and son as the caretaker of the snowbound Overlook Hotel. The hotel’s owner warns Jack that the previous caretaker murdered his wife and two daughters, before committing suicide, but Jack reassures him: “You can rest assured, Mr. Ullman, that’s not gonna happen with me. And as far as my wife is concerned, I’m sure she’ll be absolutely fascinated when I tell her about it. She’s a confirmed ghost story and horror film addict.”

Yup. Yup. Yup.

“All Work And No Play Makes Jack A Dull Boy” is NOT in the book

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy

Like so many other moments (the elevator scene, the maze, “Here’s Johnny!,” the TWINS…) it was made up for the movie.

Perhaps most significant difference is the role Danny’s gift, “the shining,” and his imaginary friend Tony, have in the novel. “The shining” is telepathic ability that enables those who posses it, Danny to possess psychic abilities, read minds and have premonitions.

Stephen King famously dislikes Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of his novel, because he completely changed King’s story.

We say, they each created a masterpiece of horror.

KUBRICK & THE MOON LANDING

There is a popular conspiracy theory that The Shining is the director(Stanley Kubrick)’s confession to faking the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Supporting “evidence” includes:

  • Danny’s Apollo 11 sweater.
The Shining Apollo 11
  • the presence of Tang in the Overlook Hotel’s pantry (a well known astronaut-favorite).
  • The room is Room 237 because the Moon is “237,000 miles from Earth.”
  • … and a theory that the dead twins symbolize the failed Gemini space missions.

October 9th: Carrie (1976 )

Our binge today is another horror based on a Stephen King novel (his first actually!): Carrie. 1976 or 2013 film? Why not make it both?

Image result for original carrie movie poster
If we’re being honest, stick with the original. (Travolta’s first film appearance, BTW!)

Even if you haven’t watched the film, you’ve probably seen the infamous depiction of the titular character, Carrie, covered in blood at prom. While it’s a horrifying image, Carrie is a tragedy as much if not more so than it is pure horror.

Carrie White, magnificently played by Sissy Spacek in the original film, is a teenager with no friends, who is sheltered by her religious mother and bullied at school. Carrie begins to discover she has telekinetic powers, and after being humiliated at prom, she unleashes them on her classmates …violence ensues.

THE CAST OF COULD HAVE BEEN IN STAR WARS

Did you know directors Brian De Palma and George Lucas are good friends? (In fact De Palma was one of the first people ever to see STAR WARS along with  Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and John Landis.) They were part of the so called, “Movie Brats” the first generation of filmmakers who hadn’t come up via theatre, novels or television; instead learning film as film. De Palma also directed a lil’ movie called, Scarface.

Image result for lucas and depalma
Brian De Palma and George Lucas

Anyway, back to Carrie. In 1975, when De Palma was holding casting for his upcoming film (Carrie), George Lucas’ was casting for his Star Wars and the two decided to hold joint auditions!

What if Carrie Fisher was cast as Carrie?

October 10th: Alien (1979)

You’ve gotta know today’s movie, and if not, you’re welcome. Ridley Scott’s Alien.
“In space, no one can hear you scream”

Image result for alien movie poster

This movie is a treasure. A horror movie set in deep space, this story follows the crew of the starship Nostromo, who is awakened from their cryo-sleep early to investigate a distress call. On an alien ship. On an unknown planet. The horror begins when the crew, which includes our heroine, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), encounters a nest of eggs inside the ship. Say it with me, I will never investigate alien organisms all willy-illy, because I am not Natalie Portman in Annihilation (aka a biologist who knows better). Something from inside one of the egg leaps out and attaches itself to Kane (#facehugger)…

Alien has a number of sequels, but unlike so many other movie franchises, (most of*) these hold their own:

So if you have the time, just make a day out of it.

H.R. Giger

The xenomorph was designed by a Swiss artist named H.R. Giger. He was part of the special effects team that won an Academy Award for design work on the first Alien. Sadly, Giger passed away in 2014 (Rest in peace sir).

October 11th: The Babadook (2014)

Image result for is there a hero in the babadook

Villain: Today’s movie’s, the Babadook is a monster from a seriously messed up children’s book. It may not sound like much but he is downright terrifying. It’s unclear how the book came to be in the main characters possession, but Amelia, a widow, reads it to her son Sam anyway… The monster.

Image result for the babadook

Hero: Another movie with perhaps no hero

Many theorize that the Babadook is actually a symbol of Amelia’s grief. Her son Sam (and the audience) watches her through the 5 stages: denial, anger, bargaining, and depression in battling the Babadook, before finally coming to acceptance of the idea that the Babadook, like grief, will never truly go away.

FAN LOVE

October 12th: Us (2019)

Hard to believe this movie came out just this year, it’s already made such an impact.

Image result for us
🎵 I got five on it 🎵

Jordan Peele’s second movie movie follows the Wilson family, a mother Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), her husband, and their son and daughter, who return to Adelaide’s childhood beach house. As we all know from the trailers, masked strangers arrive to the home, terrorizing the family – and we discover are the family’s doppelgängers.

Image result for us

This movie is worth seeing without knowing any more. For the same reason, the “hero” and “villain” are complicated. The sad parts almost out way the scary parts. But there’s some really terrifying imagery in this film. And be prepared to have Luniz’s I Got Five On It ruined for you…

Reactions to E5 of the final season, and saying goodbye to Game of Thrones

Wow, here we are Game of Thrones – lovers, the last episode ever airs tonight. SPOILERS AHEAD – THIS IS FOR THE FANS.

The final season has been a wild ride. Anyone with internet connection knows many fans are furious with the show’s writers, D&D, who some say have ruined the show, but who all agree have transformed our association to the initials “D&D” for the worse. (Leave  Dungeons & Dragons out of this).

For our take, the show isn’t ruined. It’s one of our favorites of all time. Season 8 was unfortunately, rushed. We wish we were given ten, 50-min episodes (AT LEAST), not whatever this was. More care was put into the epic battle scenes (which.. were epic), than to the character development that we’ve come to expect over almost from a decade of watching the show. Not to mention how long fans of the source material, A Song of Ice and Fire have waited to see the story given justice. Where is George R.R. Martin during all of this?

Where to begin. Our beloved Daenerys… cracked last week in Episode 4, “The Bells.” As mentioned, many people are positively outraged (just like our Queen), with Dany’s plunge into mass-murdering madness this episode; they argue they didn’t this coming, and found it out of character.

As critical thinkers, always examining every possible outcome for our favorite characters (aka. as nerds), we were not completely shocked that Dany turned out to be a mad Queen. What is shocking is how quickly the plot and her character were forced to leap. Over nine careful years we’ve seen Daenerys suffer indignities since she was a young woman – fleeing her homeland, being under her horrible brother’s control, being basically sold into marriage, then upon falling in love with her husband, losing him … She became a fan favorite because despite her adversaries she persevered and she remained decent. She has been brutal, but for Game of Thrones standards, she remains one of the most just leaders we’ve seen.

They say in Westeros, when a Targaryen is born, the Gods flip a coin, on one side is greatness and the other madness…. well, no one can argue Dany didn’t achieve greatness. Just when Daenerys finally gets everything she need in place to pursue her destiny, and return to Kings Landing, she once more choose to do what she perceives as just, and takes her armies and dragons North to fight the Night King and the dead.

This (Episode 3- the Long Night) is where D&D starts fucking with our Queen and frankly, with all of us. We have been lead to believe that the Wights and the dead are the big bad of the series- we compared them to Thanos for goodness sake!! and turns out… no.

But first, they have to kill off most of Dany’s armies, the Dothraki, Unsullied AND her most loyal fan boy, Jorah Mormont. Remember, this is the same time she finds out her boyfriend is also her nephew, and that while her family didn’t seem to take issue with that, he was raised a bit differently. We all knew the R+L=J storyline would play out this season, and as it is canon, we welcomed it, but to pile everything on Daenerys in the first 3 episodes is a LOT for a girl to process!! And the fans. Who do we feel for? Dany? Jon?

In season 1, it felt like every relationship was nuanced, and the writers spent time through out the season exploring different characters actions – and their consequences. This season, plot points that would have been stretched out over 10 episodes are introduced and “resolved” in 1 or 2. Take Sansa, revealing the best kept season in Westeros in under ten minutes of finding it out! Tell us that wouldn’t have had an entire story arch in previous seasons.

And Jamie!? First we see his character’s moral development come to a full 180% from where he started, as joins the good guys to fight the side of the living when he could have stayed safe and cozy in Kings Landing. But… then he only did he abandoned it right before our eyes by leaving Brienne to go be with Cersei.

Even then we gave the show, and Jamie, the benefit of the doubt – surely he’s going to Kings Landing to kill Cersei, because she has to die in the arms of her little brother, because they came into the world together and have to leave it together, and because Jamie is a complicated person who both loves and hates his sister, and sure as shit isn’t going to give that honor to anyone else.

But, no, wrong again. Jamie doesn’t try to hurt Cersei, he tries to save her. Cersei isn’t murdered by all of the main characters in King Landing for the battle, not by the dragon, not by Messendei’s lover, not by Sansa in a surprise attack, not even by No One. Cersei, the greatest villainess in the history of televisions (and books) IS KILLED BY F*CKING ROCKS. And not a single plan is pleased. (See memes below.)

So many events the fans have been waiting for for years took place in this season and felt underdeveloped or short-lived.

Jon finds out about his parentage.

Dany finds out about Jon.

Sansa finds outs… tells Varys… so we can assume everyone knows.

The Night King attacks!!!

The Night King is defeated!!!!

Arya is the prince/ss who was promised?!?!

They mourn all of the dead in about 10 minutes.

They travel to Kings Landing(!!)

Another. Dragon. ?!

….

The actors are BRILLIANT, the sets, the shots, the costumes (we love Michele Clapton!), the music… the show.. the crew… everyone is doing an amazing job, but we feel the ending of the story is being super rushed, and it’s a bloody shame.

  • We still have many questions, and are left unsatisfied about so much. Sure, Dany is going to choose fear over love? We can all get on board, just don’t treat us like we haven’t been watching carefully for years. Let us get there with you, don’t just shove a radical change down our throats. We just cant figure out why they’re in a hurry to stop making one of the most popular shows in history (aren’t they making enough $$$$ to keep it going?). Here are some things we hope get covered in the last episode. But we’re not holding our breath.
  • What’s Brans deal?? What did he do when he was birds?
  • Is Arya Azhor Ahai? does that matter anymore? Is the Night King really dead? What the actual fuck?
  • Arya will probably have to kill Dany becauuse she’s been saying “I’m going to kill the Queen” so much and there’s only one left.
  • Wish she’d marry Gendry even though we always knew that she’s no lady.
  • Are we ever going to see Jaqen H’ghar again?
  • Can Cersei pleaseeeee come still be alive so she can die a more fitting death?
  • Can we get a real goodbye between Jon & Ghost?
  • Can Brienne and Tormund maybe have a life together in the epilogue since we’re abandoning?
  • Is Sansa going to rule? The North? Anything?
  • What’s going to happen to Jon? Will he and Gendry’s lineages matter towards who takes control?
  • Who is gonna sit on the throne? It can’t be a happy ending… Is it just Dany, Queen of the ashes?
  • We’re going to miss speculating. (At least we still have the books to look forward to! lol) But for now… our watch has (almost) ended.

What we thought of YOU

You’ve heard it a million times – the book is better than the movie. Well, let’s hash it out.

You the show.jpg   You the book cover.jpg

It all started a few weeks ago when I went to a friend desperate for a new show to binge. She suggested YOU.

Oh, by the way, SPOILERS AHEAD.

As it turns out, YOU is a drama about a young bookstore clerk who meets and becomes obsessed with a student who visits his store. He takes his interests from 0 – EXTRA immediately, and to summarize in a word, it’s a show about stalking. Annnd we’re hooked.

The show moves along quickly, the way shows do- the main characters meet right away, drama ensues and episodes end with cliffhangers. The best and creepiest part of the whole story is how charming the main character, Joe , seems to be, when you can’t hear his internal monologue.

But my dude has issues.

He stalks Beck (the title character he refers to as ‘YOU’), reads her text messages and emails, and takes his obsession above and beyond at every possible turn. We watch in horror as Beck dates him and remains oblivious to his true desires.

Sometime in the week before episodes 6 & 7 aired, I was out of town with family, and discovered YOU is also a book!

This shouldn’t be surprising as 1) the main character works in a bookstore, 2) the main characters both love books, a trait not often found in characters written for screen rather than pages, and 3) because the chracters, plot and setting are fully developed! Books have beginnings middles and ends. Shows are pushed to exist beyond their shelf life, with creators coming up with meaningless twists to keep the story going – there has been none of that on YOU so far.

I purchased the hardback for $1 from a Book Barn in Connecticut. By the time i got back to NYC on the train, i was just about caught up with the episodes that had aired —

S P O I L E R S   A H E A D – L A S T  W A R N I N G

In Episode 6 – Joe kills Peach, Beck’s best friend in an effort to “set Beck free” (what a guy). When I read up to this moment in the book, I was eager to talk to my friend who originally recommended the series and compare the book from the series.

Here’s what I noticed so far:

Who’s that kid?

  • Joe’s coworker in the book is named Curtis, and is described as a young / teenaged pot-head. He’s a slacker, Joe fires him, and Curtis later retaliates by jumping Joe with a group of friends. This character didn’t make it into the show.
  • On the flip side, on the show, Joe’s most redeeming moments come from his interaction with a young boy who lives on the same floor in his building. I believe Joe sees the kid as a young version of himself, and therefore he protects him. So far, no such a kid in the book.

Could Curtis’ story be intertwined with Joe’s neighbors? We’ll see…

Karen

  • In the book, in efforts to get over Beck, Joe meets a stranger on the subway name Karen and they start dating. Their first interaction she says “Do I know you? No? I don’t know you at all? Then why are you looking at me”
  • This role goes to the neighbor’s aunt in the show.

Paul Brown vs Dan Fox

  • My favorite easter egg: in both book and show, Joe visits Beck’s therapist to get more insight into her (perfectly respectful of boundaries isn’t he). And he gives the pseudonym, Dan Fox. This is a reference to inside jokes Joe and Beck share about authors Paula Fox and Dan Brown. In the series, Joe uses an alias inspired by the same authors, but switches the names, introducing himself to Nicky as “Paul Brown”.
  • We see you showmakers, we see you 😉

Peach

  • Peach is described in a monstrous way in the book, which is written from Joe’s perspective. It makes sense she was cast as a beautiful woman in the show however , for two pretty obvious reasons 1) It’s television, 2) while Joe narrates the episodes via voiceover, we are privy to more than just his vision of the world – which Peach may disgust him, she is probably less repellent in reality than he makes her out to be.
  • Her Death. In both versions Joe follows Beck to Peach’s family’s “extra” house, leading to Peach’s demise. The details differ –

In the show, it’s Summer. Peach pressures Beck to go out of town with her following a suicide attempt – which appears to be false. Peach then invites a male friend over and the three of them (Peach, her friend and Beck) take molly. Peach uses the drug as an excuse to make moves on Beck, who Joe believes she is obsessed with. Beck refuses her advances, Peach sleeps with the male visitor, and Joe is proud of his girl. He follows Peach outside and is caught. They struggle over a gun, and Joe kills her. Beck learns about her death almost immediately and can mourn.

In the book it’s winter. The two girls go out of town together under no pretenses other than getting out of town. At this point in the story, Beck isn’t speaking to Joe, but he is still reading her emails and decides to follow her so he can be by her side if at a moments notice should she call. Peach makes moves on Beck when they are alone, and Beck almost submits, eventually stopping her advances. Peach, furious, storms off and refuses to speak. The following morning, on her daily run, Peach is followed by Joe, who attacks her from behind and suffocates her. While he does this, he is remembering his ex girlfriend Candace, and the fate she met. He pushes Peach out to sea, sends an email from her phone declaring she ran away, and no one is the wiser.

In both versions – he pees in a jar and leaves it at the house. That might come back to haunt him.

Predictions / What ifs?

  • Did Joe kill Candace?  We know the answer by now in the book. But I won’t spoil everythingngngng in one post.
  • Is Mr. Mooney alive?  This is addressed more in the book than show, but I have a sneaking suspicion, not.
  • What’s up with Beck?  In the book, you get the feeling she might share some of Joe’s totally-fucked-up tendencies. And that maybe things are not as they seem. Will they flesh this out in the show?
  • Are Dr Nicky and Beck really a thing?
  • Are we rooting for Joe?
  • Are we going to talk about this being on LIFETIME and how it makes us feel?

What do you think? Did you know YOU was a book? Are you going to read it now ? (Joe would want you to.) Let us know thoughts in the comments!
